Joyce Sohyun Lee och hennes kollegor i Washington Posts Visual Forensics team har med hjälp av ansiktsigenkänning, tidigare opublicerat videomaterial och intervjuer med kongressledamöter rekonstruerat det som hände i Kapitolium, Washington, den 6 januari 2021. Filmen "41 minutes of fear: A video timeline from inside the Capitol siege" vann Pulitzerpriset i klassen Public service. På Gräv23 går hon igenom arbetet med videon steg för steg och beskriver hur den här typen av innovativ journalistik kan bidra till att förstå stora viktiga nyhetshändelser. Hon hjälper oss också att hitta verktyg för att göra våra egna berättelser med hjälp av metoder som används i visuell kriminalteknik.

Joyce Sohyun Lee började som videoredaktör på Washington Posts utlandsdesk 2017 efter att ha arbetat som videoproducent på Time magazine. Hon har en bachelor från Medill School of Journalism vid Northwestern University.

Joyce Sohyun Lee is an award-winning video reporter with The Washington Post’s Visual Forensics team. She spearheaded the team’s techniques in finding new footage and analyzing it to produce compelling stories holding the powerful to account. These included a story on former president Trump’s crackdown at Lafayette Square, which won an Alfred I. Dupont-Columbia University Award, as well as pieces on protesters who were blinded or wrongfully arrested in the summer of 2020, the fatal shootings in Kenosha, Wis., and the January 6 Capitol insurrection. She joined The Post in September 2017 as a video editor on the foreign desk, where she covered the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Prior to her time at The Post, she worked as an associate video producer for Time magazine and holds a bachelor’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

 

Session on The Washington Post’s Visual Forensics January 6th story: The Washington Post’s Visual Forensics team presents its work on the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. This session will deconstruct the reporting process and video production for their story, “41 Minutes of Fear,” which was part of the entry that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. A member from the Visual Forensics team will discuss what makes this type of innovative journalism unique and the techniques utilized for bringing clarity and accountability to such an important news moment. They will share lessons learned from January 6th coverage as well as help participants brainstorm frameworks and reporting tools for their own visual forensics stories.
